Xylitol is a sugar-free sweetener documented as highly toxic to dogs, sometimes at small amounts. In dogs it can trigger a rapid release of insulin, causing blood sugar to fall sharply, and higher exposures have been linked to liver damage. It is found in sugar-free gum, some peanut butters, sweets, baked goods and certain medicines.
